> James Visser, the Champion

00/11/2003

My name is James Visser from South Africa. I am an 18 year old freerider currently in Floripa, Brazil.

I have competed in the Jet Waves cup previously on two occasions, finishing 3rd and 2nd in the sit down class, and getting 5th last year in the stand up’s. This year when we came here we were all praying for big surf, so that this could separate the freestylers from the freeriders, and our prayers were answered. Every year my dad has won every competition that he has entered, but it was about time for him to move over. I managed to top him in the final [though his ski broke down] and was stoked to take my first world title.

But the true amazement came in the stand up class. I was very lucky to make it into the semi-finals, and then into the finals. I managed to keep consistent in my wave jumping, and managed to pull of a tube ride to give me a higher wave riding score, and a higher over all score, giving me my second world title in the same day.

I had a dream that it was possible for this to happen one day, but I never thought that it would come so soon.
